What is lifestyle? What does it mean to you?
If you ask a hundred people what lifestyle means to them, I am sure you will get a hundred different responses. Back in the 90's I lived in a small town in the north island of New Zealand with my family on what was called a lifestyle block. That was a two and a half acre block of land with our home on it. We had a few sheep and I tendered to our large vegetable gardens. I was running my career business and at the time I enjoyed that lifestyle. It was a great place to bring up our kids and they also enjoyed the extra big back yard.
Not every one would enjoy that type of lifestyle though, for me currently, I would prefer a lifestyle which affords me the opportunity to travel. You can't do that if you need to attend to livestock and gardens. So what changes?
I think it can be expected that as we go through life our priorities will change. As we enter and leave relationships or take on new responsibilities such as parenting or starting a business, then we really need to reassess our values and goals and ensure that we are still living by our core values. This is a trap that many people fall into through their employment or business responsibilities, these roles can sometimes take over their lives and then before they know it their relationship is falling apart or their kids become strangers to them. With a bit of self awareness, discussion with your partner and good planning, we should be able to prioritize our values so that we are living the lifestyle we want to live.
I hope you found this post helpful. I will talk more about values and how they relate to our life goals in future posts.
