I want to start with a quote from Muhammed Ali who sadly passed away on the 5th June 2016 aged 74 years. Muhammed Ali once said" He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life." When I was a young boy I loved watching Muhammed Ali fight against the likes of Joe Frasier and others from his era. He was a great boxer, but I don't believe it was boxing that made him great. I believe it was because of the man he was. From a young age he knew who he was, he knew what he believed in and he lived his life according to his own personal values and beliefs.
Statistics tell us that a high percentage of the working population are unhappy in their work. Why do we remain in jobs that we don't like? What do we need to do to change our situation?
If I reflect on my own career, I can immediately identify jobs which I did not enjoy doing, some more so than others. I normally stayed in those jobs for 6 to 9 months, but once I realised that I didn't enjoy a particular job, I always started looking at how I could change my position.
I think it's important that people realise that there are always other options in life. Like Muhammed Ali said, we need to take risks in order to achieve anything in life. Staying at a job that you don't enjoy will only lead to nowhere. Staying at a job you don't enjoy can also impact on other parts of your life, like relationships, your mental and physical health and your self esteem.
If you are in a job which you don't like and you find it is impacting on your life outside of work then take the time to talk to someone about it, whether it is a good friend, your significant other, a life coach, career coach or counsellor.
Talking it over with someone else will help you identify what it is about your job that you don't like, how you can go about making changes that will impact how you feel, and how you can plan to change your situation.
The most important thing is that you take action. There are always other options. Take the time to explore what's out there, start chatting with friends and your network of peers and acquaintances.
Carry out an audit of your skills. Which skills need updating? In which of your interests would you like to further develop your skills? If you want to set up a small business as an option, find out which skills are going to be needed in order to START this venture. I emphasise the word "start" as we can all learn as we go, taking action and starting something is the most important step.
I hope this post has been helpful.
Enjoy your day.
