There is a lot of talk these days about following your passion, but many people seem to be despondent when they hear this as they don't know what their passions are.
Firstly I don't think its a matter of identifying your passions and then following them. I believe we need to identify or find something that will inspire us and drive us and ultimately we become passionate about what we are doing.
So how do we do this? What steps can we take to find something we could be passionate about?
We need to draw on our experiences. On a daily basis we experience feelings about things we do, see, read, or hear about. These experiences could include such things as how we like to dress, how we admire a particular style of photography. We may admire a person we know or have met because of the lifestyle they lead or the way they talk and inspire confidence in others. We may come across some art which really catches our eye or be drawn into a film or book on a specific subject.
Maybe you have reached middle age and still enjoy gaming or getting out on your skateboard. Then obviously you are passionate about these things.
This is the first step; identify those experiences which you enjoy, no matter what they are. If at 40 years of age you still enjoy building things with Duplo or Lego, then that's a great place to start.
Once you have identified what you enjoy doing, you need to ask yourself why you experience this sense of enjoyment. If you enjoy building structures with Lego, is it because you have a creative side which you are able to express through this activity or is it because you want to build things which your kids can get enjoyment from. Maybe you like experimenting with the aesthetics or like a particular architectural style or maybe you get a sense of achievement being able to build basic structures with minimal materials?? For some this activity may be therapeutic and the only time in a busy day when they can relax and not have to think about all the demands of their busy lifestyle.
Once you take the time to explore your feelings around these things that give you enjoyment and identify why they give you that enjoyment, you will hopefully see a pattern emerge.
The next step is to work out a way that you can develop this interest into a business or get paid doing what you enjoy. This is probably the hardest step, but only because it takes time and perseverance. It's a matter of coming up with an idea that will work for you and in order to do this you need to really focus on what it is that you are interested in. You can do this by reading up on the subject, checking out blogs or online videos. Joining Meetup groups of like minded individuals and just talking to more and more people about your interest and your ideas.
I feel that many people give up on their dreams as they feel they need to complete university degrees or gather years of paid experience in a particular field in order to pursue something they really want to do, but in my view, what's just as important, is having the desire to carry you through till you find a way to make your dream come true. Stay positive and stay focused and opportunities will open up.
Enjoy your day and stay positive
