In my previous post I spoke of my friend Quentin who has made a success of his Unicity business, mainly due to his business being aligned with some of his core values. I believe that this principle stands true for anything that we do in life, whether it is building a business, raising a family, excelling in sport, enjoying meaningful relationships or learning something new.
In order to excel at anything in life we need to give it our all, literally, we need to work towards our goals using our head, heart and hands.
With our head, we need to focus, our motivation and passion comes from our heart and our capability comes from our learnt skills and our hands. When we have all three areas working together we will achieve success in whatever we seek.
Through aligning each of these three areas with our core values, then we will achieve the focus that is required, the motivation that we need to succeed and the skills required to do the job.
As a parent I have watched my kids play sport over the years. For a period of time I also coached and refereed canoe polo. I have often witnessed some very talented kids compete at different sports and achieve only mediocre levels of success whilst others less talented have achieved higher levels of success. Those who attained higher levels of success had developed in all three areas, they were focussed, they were motivated and they had honed their skills to a higher level, whilst I saw some who had natural talent disappear from the sport as they lacked either focus or motivation.
Values create meaning in our lives, they help provide clarity in our goal setting and personal development. They focus our attention and form the basis for our motivation.
In choosing our goals, we need to first be clear about our values, otherwise we may end up wandering in the dark or up the wrong path.
